Reindex Files

Parent Previous Next

If you ever have a problem with UniRes, it is 99% of the time caused by an index file with an invalid entry. Symptoms of Index file failure are usually demonstrated by eratic "flipping out" of UniRes back to the Windows Desktop, or a receipt fails to print or something of a similar nature.

Reindexing 99% Cure

If you ever have a problem with UniRes, Reindex your files!

To reindex your files ...

Place your UniRes window back in the command Centre.

Make sure all other UniRes users have closed (Exited) UniRes (if you are running Multi-User UniRes).

Select Utilities from The Menu Bar at the top of your Command Centre window.

Select File System Utilities from the list of Utilities.

Select Reindex Files.

Place a tick in the Rebuild Indexes box.

Click on OK.

After a short while a message will appear saying that the Reindex has completed. Click on Ok, and try the operation that caused a problem again. In 99% of the cases this will fix your problem.

Error Messages when Reindexing

If you receive a message that a file is unreadable or corrupted, you will need to Restore your data from your most recent backup. (You do daily backups, don't you?).

This is a serious event. We suggest you call UniRes support before taking further action like restoring data, for advice.

If the reindexing is successful and you still have a problem ... call support.

More Detail

UniRes uses transaction based data recording for added security. However, no file system is 100% immune from computer or power failures. Data loss is extremely rate in UniRes, but sometimes supporting Index Files may become scrambled.

Symptoms of faulty index files are apparent “missing” bookings or transactions. Don’t worry, the index files do not contain data, they are just “pointer files” which keep your records in a particular order, much like the index pages of catalogue.

To Fix and Rebuild Indexes

Place a tick in the Rebuild Indexes box and click on Ok. You will see the progress of the indexing in the top right of your screen. Indexing takes a few minutes.

After reindexing your files, have a look and see if any “missing” records (bookings etc.) have reappeared.

Remove Deleted while Rebuilding Indexes (Option)

This is an optional step in reindexing and is not required often. If this box is ticked when you reindex your files, records which were deleted at some time are permanently removed from your data files. This in effect may make your system run faster if you have a speed problem. This is a safe process and will not harm your data. Only records deliberately deleted under program control are removed.

Validate DBC

This is a more technical process. DBC means Database Container. The DBC file is one of your main files. It holds information about the structure of your data files – not the contents of your files. This file can be Validated – tested for consistency.

Place a tick in the Validate DBC box and click on Ok. You should see the following message …

If you don’t, a restore might be necessary. See Restore .

Alternatively, call your support centre for assistance.

Ok

Starts the selected process.
